How to Remove Coffee Stains from Carpet (Step-by-Step)
A spilled cup doesn't have to mean a ruined carpet. This method lifts both fresh and dried coffee stains using ingredients you already have.

Coffee spills are one of the most common carpet accidents, but they're highly treatable with the right method — even once they've dried. Here's a step-by-step approach using basic household ingredients.
What You'll Need
- White paper towels or a clean white cloth
- Cold water
- Dish soap (a clear, dye-free one works best)
- White vinegar
- Baking soda
- A spray bottle
- A soft-bristle brush
Avoid colored cloths, which can transfer dye onto damp carpet fibers.
Step 1: Blot, Don't Rub
Press a paper towel down on the spill, working from the outside edge toward the center. Rubbing spreads the stain and pushes it deeper into the fibers.
Step 2: Make a Cleaning Solution
Mix one tablespoon of dish soap, one tablespoon of white vinegar, and two cups of cold water in a spray bottle. This breaks down the tannins that cause discoloration without bleaching carpet dye.
Step 3: Apply and Blot Again
Spray until the stain is damp, let it sit two to three minutes, then blot from the outside in with a clean section of cloth each time.
Step 4: Rinse and Dry
Blot with plain cold water to remove soap residue, then press a dry towel over the area and use a fan to speed up drying and avoid a musty smell.
For Dried or Old Stains
- Sprinkle baking soda over the stain and let it sit 15 minutes.
- Vacuum it up.
- Apply the soap-and-vinegar solution and let it sit five minutes.
- Work it in gently with a soft brush, then blot as before.
- Repeat as needed — old stains often take two or three cycles.
A Few Things to Avoid
- Don't use hot water — heat can set the stain permanently.
- Avoid bleach-based cleaners on colored carpet.
- Test any solution on a hidden patch first.
Fresh or dried, most coffee stains lift fully with the right technique — no professional cleaner required.
